Old Carter

Basic information

Old Carter is a utility NPC in Phantom Blade Zero, the man who moves the player quickly from one region to the next. He travels with Quick Hand Zhang and Lian Xie. He looks like nothing more than a wagon driver, and there is reason to suspect a background in The Order’s modification work.

Character overview

Old Carter is the NPC who handles travel in Phantom Blade Zero: cross-region fast movement, and the pickup and drop-off between hubs. He keeps company with Quick Hand Zhang and Lian Xie, and on the outside he is only a wagon driver — though what sits under that is probably tied to The Order’s modification work. He is how the player gets around the Phantom World, and that alone makes him one of the more useful people in it.

Background

Who Old Carter really is has never been settled. He presents as a plain wagon driver and nothing else. But he rides with Quick Hand Zhang and Lian Xie, both of them key figures, and he crosses a world built on conspiracy without anyone stopping him — which is not what happens to ordinary drivers. One reading is that he is connected to The Order’s Ghost Envoy arts, the craft used to modify its agents. Nothing in the game has confirmed it either way.

Personality

• A man of few words, sober and steady in his habits
• A first-rate hand with a wagon, able to take it over any kind of ground
• Ordinary on the surface, and holding a great deal back
• Absolutely loyal to Quick Hand Zhang and Lian Xie

Appearance

An old man in plain carter’s clothing. His face is deeply lined and his gaze goes a long way in, the look of someone who has come through more weather than he will ever talk about.
