Why you keep coming back here
Phantom Blade Zero runs on a seamless map split into wide, linear stretches. Pangzhen Township is the exception: it is the one settled area, sitting in the south of the Phantom World, and it carries most of the game’s non-hostile population.
That makes it your maintenance stop rather than a challenge zone. Bells here refill your combat resources, the shops sit within walking distance of each other, and the region connects outward to five named regions, one of them the valley you start in. If a run has gone badly, this is where you resupply before pushing on.
It is also one of eight major maps. The other confirmed names are the starting valley, the blood-red forest, the lake region, the prison mountain, and the orthodox camp — Pangzhen Township sits in the middle of that web rather than at either end.
Where the services sit
Pangzhen Township is the one region in the game with a concentrated service layer. At least four of its friendly characters run shops or functions, and most of the game’s non-hostile cast lives here rather than spread across the map.
That matters for routing, not for shopping: it makes the town the cheapest place to reset a run. Resupply, then leave.
Who each character is and what each one does belongs on a separate page — see the Pangzhen Township NPC list for the roster and the confidence level behind each name.
What connects here
Five regions touch this hub, one of them the valley you start in. The roster gives directions and nothing else — no level bands, no gate conditions.
| Region | What it is | Why you would route through it |
|---|---|---|
| The starting valley | Opening area | Backfill early pickups you skipped |
| The blood-red forest | Fogged forest region | Mid-run material sweep |
| The lake region | Water area | Sailing routes and side paths |
| The prison mountain | Mountain prison | Late push, once your blades are levelled |
| The orthodox camp | Faction camp | Access timing unconfirmed |
| Pangzhen Township itself | Hub | Services, resupply, respec |
Because the hub sits between them, every route decision becomes a question about which region you can afford to re-walk. That is the town’s actual function on the map.
Getting in and out
Travel works on two layers, and both matter more than they look.
- Bells. Touch one and the fog lifts from the surrounding minimap, your resources refill, and the bell becomes a teleport node. Bells are the spine of the map.
- Travel talismans. These let you jump to a bell from anywhere, which turns a long backtrack into a single item use. Keep a stack.
- The coachman. Named as a friendly NPC with a probable transport function. If he works the way the roster implies, he is a second travel layer inside the hub itself.
Because Pangzhen Township connects to five regions, a bell here doubles as a staging point for most of the map. Opening the hub early compresses every later trip.
A first pass through the town
- Enter from the bell side and touch the bell before anything else — fog clear plus a respawn point.
- Walk the main street end to end once without buying anything. Service fronts cluster on it, and the map will not label them.
- Note every locked door and the item it names. The map marks the requirement; you do not need to solve it now.
- Sweep the ground level for shards before climbing anything.
- Leave through the exit that points at your next region, not the one you came in by.
What the map will not tell you
Quest markers are colour-coded, and the colours are not decoration: gold tracks the main path, purple marks key side content, and locked areas display the requirement they are waiting on.
The part that bites is missable side quests. Some are tied to Pangzhen Township NPCs, and some cannot be recovered once their window closes. Because this is the hub, it is also where most of those windows open — walk the town between major story beats rather than after them.
Locked areas are marked with both a position and the item they need, so there is no reason to stand at a gate guessing. Note the marker, come back with the right Phantom Edge, and move on.
What to pick up while you are here
Pangzhen Township is a hub, not a collectible dungeon, but the surrounding region still feeds the seven tracked categories: bells, weapons and Phantom Edges, accessories and potions, challenge spots, Sha-Chi amber shards, blackstone fragments, and Memory Flowers.
Each map screen shows how many of each you have found and what percentage of the area is complete. The three shard types are the ones that change your character rather than your inventory — each one is a permanent bump, not a consumable.
Exact per-area totals for Pangzhen Township are not published yet, so a completion percentage on your map screen is currently the only reliable count.
Where the story side lives
Pangzhen Township carries a large share of the game’s narrative weight, and several plot threads pass through it.
We do not retell that material here. The in-game archives and S-Game’s own channels are the place for it; this page stays on services, routing, and what to pick up.
FAQ
Is Pangzhen Township a combat zone? Mostly not. It is the maintenance stop. Expect services and side content rather than a gauntlet.
How many NPCs actually sell things? At least four offer shops or functions. The other named characters are confirmed to exist, not confirmed to trade.
Can I fast-travel from anywhere? With a travel talisman, yes. Otherwise you travel bell to bell.
Should I clear side quests before leaving? Yes. Some are missable, and this is where most of them start.
Does the hub connect to everything? Five named regions, the starting valley included. It is the closest thing the map has to a centre.
